Car Key Replacement in Royal Oak, MI
Lost your only car key, or quoted a dealer price that made you sit down? Locksmith Solutions Royal Oak replaces car keys and fobs at your car in Royal Oak — no tow to a dealership, and no original key needed for most vehicles.
Tell us the year, make and model when you call. Your full price is confirmed before dispatch, so the figure you agree on the phone is the figure the job is done for.
What we handle
- ✓ Lost keys replaced with no original and no spare — key originated from your VIN
- ✓ Transponder (chip) keys cut and programmed to the immobiliser
- ✓ Key fobs and remote-head keys replaced and programmed
- ✓ Smart keys and push-to-start proximity fobs
- ✓ Spare keys made while you still have a working key — the cheapest time to do it
- ✓ Emergency blades cut for fobs, so a dead fob battery never locks you out
- ✓ Old keys erased from the car’s memory after a loss or theft (see the steps below)
- ✓ Keys for Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Jeep, Dodge and Ram, plus other major makes — see our brand pages: Ford · Chevrolet & GMC · Jeep
If your key is locked inside the car rather than lost, that is a lockout, not a replacement — start with our Locked Out Guide or the Auto Locksmith page. If you already own a fob and only need it programmed, see Key Fob Programming.
All keys lost? The steps, in order
You do not need an original key for a replacement to be made. Here is exactly what happens on an all-keys-lost job.
Step 1 — Call and say “all keys lost” up front. It changes the equipment and the price, so it should never surface as a surprise on arrival. You get one full price on the phone before anyone is dispatched.
Step 2 — Gather your documents. Before any key is made, you will be asked for:
- Your VIN — the 17-character number on the driver-side dashboard plate, visible through the windshield, or on your registration or insurance papers
- Your vehicle title or registration, in your name
- A government photo ID that matches the paperwork
This check protects you. A provider who never asks for it is a warning sign.
Step 3 — The key is originated, not copied. There is nothing to copy, so the factory key code is retrieved from your VIN, or decoded from a lock. A new blank is then cut to that code.
Step 4 — The new key is programmed at your car. The chip or fob is enrolled to the immobiliser through the car’s diagnostic port. The car has to be present for this step — which is why the mobile route needs no tow.
Step 5 — The lost keys are erased. The missing keys are deleted from the car’s memory, so a found or stolen key can no longer start your car. On many models an erased key’s blade can still open a door by hand; if your key was taken with anything that identifies the car or your address, tell us on the call so we can talk through the physical lock options too.
Step 6 — Everything is tested with you there. Locking, unlocking, remote functions and engine start are all checked before the job is finished.
Step 7 — Get the spare made in the same visit. A spare made while a working key exists is a copy. A spare made after every key is gone is another origination — slower and dearer.
What it costs
Our published range for car key and fob replacement is $120–$400+. Where your job lands inside that range depends on the key type — a transponder key costs less than a smart proximity fob — and on whether a working key still exists.
All-keys-lost work costs more than making a spare, and there is a mechanical reason for that. With a working key, the new key is added. With none, the key code has to be retrieved, the immobiliser entered from zero, and the lost keys erased as part of the same job.
What you will not get from us is a low phone figure that grows on arrival. Your price is confirmed in full before dispatch. If a job turns out to be one we cannot do — a small number of the newest models restrict key programming — we tell you on the phone, before anyone is sent out.
Dealer vs locksmith: the honest comparison
| Dealership | Locksmith Solutions Royal Oak (mobile) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the work happens | At the dealership — the car has to get there | At your car, wherever it is parked in Royal Oak |
| All keys lost | Usually means a tow before any key work begins | No tow — the equipment comes to the car |
| Key supplied | OEM blank only | The correct key for your vehicle, confirmed by VIN and key type on the call |
| Wait | Same day for simple keys; ordered smart keys and modules can take days | One visit at the car where the vehicle allows it |
| Price confirmed | Parts and programming are often quoted as separate lines | One full price confirmed before dispatch |
| Old keys erased | Yes — ask for it by name | Yes — part of the all-keys-lost steps above |
| Best for | The newest restricted models; warranty or lease paperwork that requires a dealer record | Most lost-key, spare-key and fob jobs on everyday vehicles |
Neither route is right for every car. If yours is one of the restricted ones, we say so on the phone and the dealer is the honest answer.
Who this is for
- ✓ You lost your only key or fob and have no spare anywhere
- ✓ Your keys were stolen and you need the old keys erased, not just a new key added
- ✓ The dealer quoted you a total — plus a tow — and you want a second price before you commit
- ✓ You still have one working key and want a spare made before it becomes an emergency
- ✓ Your fob died and you are not sure whether it is a battery, the fob, or the car — start with the battery: most fobs use a CR2032 coin cell, and dropping range is the usual first symptom
- ✓ You bought a car with only one key and want that fixed while it is still the cheap version of the job

FAQs
Can you make a car key if I lost the original?
Yes — a replacement does not need an original to copy from. The key code is retrieved from your VIN or decoded from a lock, a blank is cut to that code, and the chip is programmed to your car at the vehicle. Bring your VIN, title or registration, and photo ID.
Can a locksmith really program a modern key, or do I have to use the dealer?
For most makes and models, a properly equipped locksmith programs the key at the car, through the diagnostic port — programming teaches the car to trust the new key. A small number of the newest models restrict that access, and if yours is one of them we tell you on the phone before dispatch. See the comparison table above.
What documents do I need for a replacement car key?
You need your VIN, proof of ownership (title or registration in your name), and a photo ID that matches. The VIN is on the dashboard plate visible through the windshield, the driver door jamb, or your registration and insurance papers. No key is made without this check.
Will my lost key still work after a new one is made?
The lost key is erased from the car’s memory as part of the job, so it can no longer start the engine. On many models its blade can still open a door mechanically, which is why a stolen key that can be linked to the car deserves a conversation about the physical locks as well. If you later find the lost key, it will need to be re-enrolled before it will start the car again.
How much does car key replacement cost in Royal Oak?
Our published range for car key and fob replacement is $120–$400+. Your exact price depends on the key type and on whether any working key remains, and it is confirmed in full before dispatch. All-keys-lost jobs sit higher in the range than a spare made from a working key, because the key has to be originated and the old keys erased.
How long does it take?
The work is done at your car in a single visit where the vehicle allows it — there is no tow and no leaving the car at a dealership. The dealer route can add days when a smart key or module has to be ordered. Call +1 (947) 263-5566 with your year, make and model and we will tell you plainly what your job involves.
Do I need to tow my car if I have lost all my keys?
No — towing belongs to the dealership route. A mobile locksmith brings the cutting and programming equipment to the car, whether it is parked at home, at work, or in a Downtown Royal Oak parking structure. Our Emergency Locksmith page covers the out-of-hours side of the same service.
Should I get a spare key made even though mine still works?
Yes — a spare made from a working key is the cheapest version of this job there is. Losing your last key turns a simple copy into a full origination, with the code retrieval, from-zero programming and old-key erasure described above. Keep the spare at home or with a trusted person, never hidden on the car.
I bought a key or fob online. Can you program it?
Sometimes — it depends on whether the part actually matches your car. The reliable check is the FCC ID and part number against your year, make and model, and some used fobs are locked to the car they came from and cannot be reused. Call with those details before you spend more money on it. Our dedicated page for this job is planned here: Key Fob Programming.
