Smart Lock Installation in Royal Oak, MI
Imagine never standing at your own door digging through a bag for keys again. A smart lock opens with a code, your fingerprint or your phone, and we fit it, set up your codes and pair the app before we leave.
You approve the total on the phone before dispatch. No surprises at the door.
A smart lock lets you open your front door with a code, a fingerprint or your phone. No key to lose, no spare hidden under a mat, and a separate code for everyone who legitimately comes and goes.
Locksmith Solutions Royal Oak fits and sets up smart locks across Royal Oak. We check the door first, fit the lock so the bolt runs freely, and leave you with your codes set and the app working — not a box of parts and a manual.
What We Handle
One visit covers the fitting, the setup and the walkthrough — you are left with a lock that works the way you expected it to.
Full smart deadbolt replacements — keypad, touchscreen, fingerprint and Wi-Fi models.
Retrofit smart locks that fit over your existing deadbolt, so your current key keeps working.
Keypad deadbolts with no app at all, for households that want codes without connectivity.
Major brands including Schlage, Kwikset, Yale and August — supplied by you, or talk to us before you buy.
Door and strike alignment as part of the fit, so the motor is not fighting the frame.
App setup, user codes, auto-lock and guest codes set up with you before we leave.
Battery and backup-entry walkthrough — you will know exactly how you get in if the batteries die.
Smart lock fitting combined with a lock change where the old hardware is worn or builder-grade (see Costs below).
Removing or replacing a smart lock fitted badly — one that keeps jamming or eating batteries.
This page covers smart lock fitting for homes. The wider home service — rekeying, lock changes and deadbolts — sits on our Residential Locksmith page, and if your existing smart lock’s battery has died and you are outside now, that is a lockout: see our Emergency Locksmith page.
Before You Buy: Three Checks That Save a Return Trip
Door preparation
Most smart deadbolts expect a standard 2-1/8 inch bore, a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, and a door between 1-3/8 and 1-3/4 inches thick. Older Royal Oak doors sometimes sit outside those sizes and need an adapter or minor preparation — worth knowing before the lock is on your porch.
Keyway and existing keys
If you want the new lock to work with your current house key, the brand and keyway have to match what is already on your doors. A Kwikset-keyed house and a Schlage smart lock will not share a key without cylinder work.
How you will actually use it
Codes only, app control from anywhere, or guest codes for a cleaner or dog walker are three different locks at three different prices. Buying the connected model and never connecting it is the most common overspend we see.

How Smart Lock Fitting Works
Seven steps, in the order they happen on the day — our full working method is set out on our Our Process page.
You call us
Call +1 (947) 263-5566. Tell us the door, the lock you have in mind (or that you need help choosing), and whether the door currently has a deadbolt.
We confirm the full price before dispatch
Fitting, setup and any door preparation are quoted as one figure you approve first.
We check the door before anything comes off
Bore, backset, thickness, and how the door sits in its frame. If the door needs lifting or the strike moving, that is dealt with as part of the fit — a smart lock on a misaligned door drains its batteries and jams.
We fit the lock and set the bolt travel
The bolt must throw and retract fully with no resistance. We test it repeatedly, because a bolt that works nine times out of ten is a lockout waiting to happen.
We set it up with you
Your master code, codes for the household, auto-lock timing, and the app paired to your phone if your model has one. Guest and cleaner codes are set to expire the way you want them to.
We walk through the dead-battery plan
Where the backup key is, whether your model has 9V jump contacts or a USB emergency port, and what the low-battery warning looks and sounds like. You will not be learning any of this standing outside in January.
We test every entry method before we leave
Code, app, fingerprint if fitted, and the physical key. If one route fails on the day, it gets fixed on the day.

What Smart Lock Installation Costs
This site does not publish a set price for smart lock installation, because the honest figure depends on the lock, the door, and whether any preparation is needed. What we do on every job is confirm the full price before dispatch — fitting, setup and any door work as one figure, agreed before anyone sets off.
Two parts make up the total, and it helps to keep them separate when you compare quotes:
The lock itself
Keypad-only models sit at the low end; Wi-Fi, fingerprint and premium finishes cost more. You can supply your own lock, or ask us before you buy.
The fitting and setup
A standard swap on a prepared door is the straightforward job. Fresh drilling, strike work on a settled frame, or app and hub setup adds time.
If a quote you receive elsewhere will not separate the lock from the labour — or the total will not be confirmed until the technician is at your door — that is the pattern behind most installation complaints.
Smart Lock vs Regular Deadbolt
Neither is automatically safer. A smart lock’s bolt is a deadbolt, judged by the same ANSI/BHMA grades as a mechanical one — Grade 1 is the strongest, Grade 3 the basic minimum. What changes is how you get in, and what you have to look after.
Smart Lock
Getting inCode, fingerprint, app, and on most models a backup key.
Who has accessSeparate codes per person; delete a code and that access ends.
Record of entryMany models log who entered and when.
Forgotten to lockAuto-lock can secure the door behind you.
PowerBatteries, typically changed every 6–12 months.
Internet outageLocal entry still works; remote features pause.
Main weaknessDead batteries if warnings are ignored; weak or shared codes; outdated app or firmware.
UpkeepBatteries, occasional app and firmware updates.
Regular Deadbolt
Getting inPhysical key only.
Who has accessWhoever holds a copy of the key; copies cannot be taken back.
Record of entryNone.
Forgotten to lockThe door stays as you left it.
PowerNone — it cannot run flat.
Internet outageNo effect.
Main weaknessLost or copied keys; no way to know who came in.
UpkeepAlmost none.
Our honest read: choose the smart lock when access is your problem — kids, guests, cleaners, a key that keeps getting copied. Choose a good mechanical deadbolt when simplicity is the point. And whichever you choose, the grade of the bolt and the quality of the fitting decide the physical security; the electronics never rescue a badly fitted lock. If the decision is really about old keys still being out there, that is a rekeying question first — see Rekey Locks.
Who This Service Is For
Families whose kids come home to an empty house — a code beats a key under the mat, and you can see the entry in the log.
Households with a cleaner, dog walker or carer who needs access on set days, with a code that can be time-limited and deleted.
Anyone who has handed out one key too many and wants access they can actually take back.
Landlords between tenants who want codes changed instead of hardware changed — with the tenant conversation handled properly (see the renter FAQ below).
Renters whose landlord has agreed in writing — a retrofit lock that keeps the existing deadbolt and key is usually the easiest yes.
Owners of older Royal Oak homes whose doors have settled, where a smart lock needs the alignment done properly or it will jam and drain.
Smart Lock FAQs
Can a smart lock be hacked?
Yes, technically — through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi weaknesses or an outdated app, in the same way any connected device can be attacked. In practice it is rare, and the exposure is usually the basics: a weak account password, firmware never updated, or a no-name lock with poor software. A major-brand lock with encryption and two-factor authentication where offered, kept updated, is a hard target — and forced entry through the door itself remains the route burglars actually use, which is why the bolt grade and fitting matter as much as the electronics.
What happens if the battery dies? Will I be locked out?
You should not be, if you know your lock’s backup route — which is why we walk through it at fitting. Most smart locks warn you first, by app, a flashing light or a beep, and that warning means days to a couple of weeks. With completely dead batteries: models with a key cylinder open with the physical key; many keypad models have emergency contacts underneath for a fresh 9V battery, which powers the lock long enough to enter your code; some newer models take temporary USB power from a power bank. If none of those routes is available to you, call us — it is a standard lockout, and our Emergency Locksmith cover runs 24/7.
Does every smart lock have a 9V jump or a backup key?
No — and this is the detail most often got wrong online. Schlage’s own support is explicit that its Encode locks have no 9V jumpstart; Encode owners use the physical backup key, while the keyless Schlage Touch series is the one with 9V jump contacts. Kwikset SmartCode models generally have both the 9V contacts and a key cylinder, and Yale Assure models have 9V terminals under the keypad — but the key-free Yale Assure SL has no key cylinder at all, by design. Check your specific model’s backup before you need it, not after.
How long do smart lock batteries last?
Typically 6–12 months on a set of AA batteries. Wi-Fi models sit at the shorter end because the radio works harder; Bluetooth-only and hub-connected models last longer. Cold shortens battery performance — a real factor through a Royal Oak winter, where January nights run well below freezing — and a door the motor has to fight can cut battery life roughly in half. Heed the first low-battery warning rather than the last one.
Does a smart lock work without Wi-Fi?
Yes, for getting in and out. The keypad, a fingerprint reader, Bluetooth from your phone nearby, and stored codes all work with no internet at all, and the lock runs on its own batteries, so a power outage does not stop local entry either. What needs the internet is the remote side: unlocking from elsewhere, live alerts, and the activity log syncing to your phone. If your router is down, you lose the remote features until it is back — not your front door.
Is a smart lock safer than a regular deadbolt?
Neither is inherently safer. Both are deadbolts underneath, and both should be judged by the same ANSI/BHMA grades — Grade 1 strongest, Grade 3 basic. A smart lock removes the copied-key problem and adds codes, logs and auto-lock; it adds batteries and software to look after. Installation quality and the door and strike around the lock decide more than the category does — the comparison above lays the trade-off out in full.
I’m renting. Can I have a smart lock installed?
Only with your landlord’s permission — get it in writing before you buy anything, because most leases treat a lock change as an alteration. Expect two conditions: your landlord keeps a way in for emergencies (a code or the key), and you remove the lock or restore the original hardware when you move out. The easiest permission to get is a retrofit lock, which mounts inside over the existing deadbolt and changes nothing on the outside of the door — your landlord’s key keeps working exactly as before. Once you have the written yes, we are happy to fit it.
Can I keep my existing keys with a smart lock?
With a retrofit model, yes — it turns your existing deadbolt from inside, so the outside of the door and your current key stay untouched. With a full replacement smart deadbolt, the new lock comes with its own keys; whether it can be keyed to match your other doors depends on the brand and keyway matching what you already have, which is one of the checks we run before fitting.
Do smart locks need a monthly subscription?
Most major brands do not charge one for basic use — codes, the app and local control are included. Fees show up when a lock is folded into a monitored alarm service, or an optional cloud tier adds features. If a quote bundles your lock into a monthly plan, ask what stops working if you cancel; on the locks we fit, the answer should be “the extras,” never “your front door.”
Will a smart lock fit my door?
Usually. Most residential smart locks are built for a standard deadbolt preparation — 2-1/8 inch bore, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, door 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick. Doors outside that — common on older Royal Oak homes — may need an adapter plate or minor preparation, which we check before fitting rather than discovering halfway through. Send us the lock model and a photo of the door edge if you want the answer before booking.
My smart lock keeps jamming or eating batteries. Can you fix that?
Often, yes — and the cause is usually the fit, not the lock. A bolt that scrapes the strike makes the motor work hard on every cycle, which drains batteries and eventually jams. We check the door’s alignment and the strike position, correct what is binding, and re-test the bolt travel. If the lock itself has failed, we will say so plainly and quote the replacement before any work starts.
Can you install a smart lock I already bought?
Yes — most of our fittings are customer-supplied locks. Tell us the brand and model when you call, so we can confirm it suits your door before the visit. If it turns out to be the wrong lock for the door, we will show you why at the door and quote your options; we will not force a bad fit and leave you with the problems.
